A quick guide
How to choose a formal dress
A few simple questions make the shopping easier. Our team will help you with each of them.
Start with the dress code
Black tie and formal usually mean a floor-length gown. Cocktail is shorter and less formal. If the invitation does not say, ask the host.
Think about the shape
Fitted mermaid styles show off your waist and hips. A-line and flowing skirts are comfortable and forgiving. Draped bodices and sleeves add coverage. Try a few shapes before you decide.
Choose a colour you love
Pick a colour you already feel confident in, and try more than one. Colours look different on you than on a hanger, and in photos.
Look at the neckline and sleeves
Sweetheart, V-neck, one-shoulder and off-the-shoulder necklines all work differently on different people. If you would like sleeves or a wrap, tell us.
Think about length and shoes
Bring the shoes you plan to wear, or ones with a similar heel height, so you can see the length and how the dress moves.
Try more than one
The dress you expect to love is not always the one you do. Trying a few different styles is the quickest way to find what suits you.
Styles explained
Shapes, necklines and sleeves at a glance
If you are not sure what to ask for, these are the words you will hear in the showroom. Our collection covers many of them.
Fitted and mermaid
Close to the body through the hips, often with a split and a slight flare or train at the hem. These are the classic evening shapes, and many of our floor-length gowns are in this family.
A-line and flowing
A skirt that skims the body and moves as you walk. Comfortable for dancing and long evenings, and flattering on most shapes.
Draped and ruched
Gathered fabric across the bodice or waist creates shape and can be very flattering. You will see it on many of our gowns and on the mother of the bride and groom styles.
Necklines and sleeves
Sweetheart, V-neck, one-shoulder, off-the-shoulder and strapless are all in the collection, along with long, short and flutter sleeves, and some styles with a wrap or jacket.
Colour
Choosing a colour
Our dresses come in a wide range of colours, and the same style often looks different in different shades.
Jewel tones
Emerald, teal, navy, burgundy, wine and deep blues suit evening events and look rich in photographs.
Black and neutrals
Black, charcoal and champagne tones are easy to accessorise and work for most dress codes. Black is a safe choice for a formal event, and many people also wear it as a wedding guest.
Brights and pastels
Red, fuchsia, cobalt, yellow, light blue and soft pink are a good choice for school formals, summer events and anyone who wants to stand out.
Prints and florals
Floral prints suit daytime events and weddings in warmer months. Try them on, because prints can look very different on you than on a hanger.

What kinds of formal dresses do you have?
Our formal and evening range includes fitted floor-length gowns with side splits, sequin and lace gowns, floral prints, midi and short dresses, and dresses with sleeves, in a wide range of colours. We also have dresses for the mother of the bride and groom and bridesmaid dresses. You can browse the styles online first.
Do you have school formal and graduation dresses?
Our evening wear collection includes styles for school formals, as well as galas, weddings and other special occasions. Stock changes, so call (02) 4283 6077 with your size, colour and date and we will tell you what is available. Browse the formal and evening dresses online first.
Do you have dresses for the mother of the bride and groom?
Yes. We have a mother of the bride and groom collection of elegant gowns, many with sleeves and softer, draped shapes. Tell us the wedding date, the venue and the colours of the day when you book, and we will help you choose styles to try. See our mother of the bride and groom styles.
Do you have bridesmaid dresses too?
Yes. We have bridesmaid dresses from Nicoletta and Mori Lee, so you can look at formal dresses and bridesmaid dresses on the same visit. If you are planning a wedding, you can also look at our wedding dresses in the same showroom.
Do I need an appointment?
We recommend booking, so that our team can give you time and have styles ready. You can use our booking page or call (02) 4283 6077. Tell us the occasion, your date and your size, and we will talk through what is in stock.
How much do formal dresses cost?
Prices are not shown online for most of our dresses, so call (02) 4283 6077 or ask when you book and we will tell you. Selected wedding gowns at reduced prices are shown on our sale gowns page.
What sizes do you stock?
Stock and sizes change, so the best way to find out is to call (02) 4283 6077 with your size and the dress you like. Tell us the date you need it by, and we will let you know what is possible.
Can formal dresses be altered?
Ask us when you choose your dress. Our team can talk you through what is possible for the style you choose, and what to allow time for before your event.
Can I bring my mum or a friend?
Yes. Many customers bring their mum, a friend or the rest of the bridal party. Let us know how many are coming when you book, so we can plan the space.
What should I wear or bring to try on a formal dress?
Bring the shoes you plan to wear, or ones with a similar heel height, and wear or bring the underwear that suits the style. A strapless or nude bra works for most formal dresses. Photos of the event, the dress code or the dresses you like help our team choose styles to try.
How do I choose a colour?
Start with the colours you already love wearing and feel confident in. For a wedding, check the wedding colours first and avoid white, ivory and cream. For a formal or school formal, choose a colour you will still like in the photos, and try more than one, because colours look different on you than they do on a hanger.
How do I choose a style for my body shape?
There are no strict rules, but a few shapes help. Fitted mermaid styles show off your waist and hips, A-line and flowing skirts are comfortable and forgiving, and draped bodices and sleeves add coverage. The quickest way to find what suits you is to try a few different silhouettes in the showroom.
What is the difference between black tie, formal and cocktail?
Black tie is the most formal dress code and usually means a floor-length gown. Formal is similar, and a long dress is the safe choice. Cocktail is shorter and less formal, with knee-length or midi dresses. If an invitation does not say, ask the host. Our team can help you choose the right length for the dress code.
Do you have dresses with sleeves?
Yes. Some of our styles have long, short or flutter sleeves, and some come with a wrap or jacket. Mention sleeves when you book and we will have some ready to try.
Do you have short and midi dresses?
Yes, we have some short and midi-length dresses as well as floor-length gowns. Tell us the dress code and the length you prefer, and we will find styles to try.
Can I wear a formal dress as a wedding guest?
Yes. Many of our floral, midi and floor-length styles suit wedding guests. Avoid white, ivory and cream, and check the dress code on the invitation. If it says formal or black tie, a floor-length gown is the safe choice.
What accessories do you have?
We have earrings, headpieces, tiaras and other accessories. You can browse earrings and accessories online, and try them with your dress in the showroom.
Do you also have wedding dresses?
Yes. Sposabella Bridal is a wedding dress shop first, with designer wedding gowns from WONÁ Concept, Eva Lendel, Pronovias, Enzoani, Mori Lee, Aire Barcelona and Veni Infantino, plus a Curve collection. You can browse our wedding dresses online or book a free one-hour bridal appointment.
What is a mermaid dress?
A mermaid dress is fitted through the bodice, waist and hips, then flares out towards the hem. It is a classic evening shape, and many of our floor-length gowns are fitted or mermaid styles. If you like the shape but want to move easily, ask to try an A-line style as well.
Can I wear black to a wedding?
Often, yes. Black is common at formal and evening weddings, but check the invitation and the couple's wishes first, and avoid white, ivory and cream. Adding colourful accessories or earrings can lift a black dress.
How do I find the right size?
Sizes vary between styles, so go by the fit on you, not the number on the tag. Tell us your usual size when you call or book, and try a size either side in the showroom if you can. Stock changes, so call (02) 4283 6077 to check what is available.
What colours suit a summer or winter event?
Lighter colours, florals and shorter lengths suit warm-weather and daytime events. Deeper jewel tones, sequins and long sleeves suit cooler evenings. Choose what you feel confident in, and check the dress code.
What are your opening hours?
We are open Monday, Wednesday and Friday 10am to 5pm, Thursday 10am to 7pm and Saturday 10am to 4pm. We are closed on Tuesday and Sunday. Hours can differ on public holidays, so call to check.
Is there parking?
Yes. There is free on-site parking at the showroom, so there is no circling the block or feeding a meter.
Which way is it from Shellharbour and Dapto?
Without heavy traffic, Fairy Meadow is about 17 minutes from Dapto, 26 minutes from Oak Flats and about 28 minutes from Shellharbour and Albion Park, mostly on the Princes Motorway. Kiama is about 43 minutes away. See also our Shellharbour page.
How early should I shop for a formal dress?
As early as you can, so you have time to choose, to check what is in stock and to allow for any alterations. Tell us your date when you call and we will talk through what is possible.
What is the difference between evening wear and formal wear?
In our showroom, they are the same collection. Formal dresses and evening dresses are both long, elegant styles for formal events, and many people use the two terms to mean the same thing.
